A Brief History of Lyceum Theatre

Lyceum theatre is currently hosting the award winning London musical, The Lion King. LyceumTheatre Located at 21 Wellington Street, Westminster, London, WC2E 7DN, with occupancy of 2,000. The current site was opened on July 14, 1834, and designed mainly by Samuel Beazley. He has given the theatre a unique characteristic in its balcony, as it is hung over the circle. The building was reconstructed by C.J. Phipps in 1882 with few improvements.

The initial few years of the theatre hosted first modern English opera, such as "The Mountain Sylph" and was followed by "Fair Rosamun," in 1837, "Farinelli" in 1839 and "Blanche of Jersey," in 1840. From 1841 to 1843, theatre was managed by Michael Balfe. From 1847 to 1855, theatre was managed by Madame Lucia Elizabeth Vestris managed and produced shows by James Planché and the adaptation of "A Tale of Two Cities" by Tom Taylor. Later, Charles Fechter managed the theatre from 1863 to 1867.
